Nintendo's 1983 Japanese Famicom arithmetic action game makes every calculation a short journey. In CALCULATE, a target number is not entered at a desk: Junior has to climb, choose digits and operators, and build a route to it before another player can take the useful piece away.

ドンキーコングJR.の算数遊び begins with a wonderfully strange promise: arithmetic will happen in public, on a playfield, with a little character climbing toward the pieces of a calculation. Nintendo released the Japanese Famicom game on 12 December 1983, and its title states the subject plainly. This is a math game. Yet the way it presents math is much less desk-bound than that label suggests. Donkey Kong holds up a target number. Junior moves through a small world of digits and operators. The player does not type a result into a box. They make a chain of choices that eventually becomes the result. 1 2 8
That physical arrangement gives the game its particular energy. A useful number is not simply available because the player knows it; Junior still has to reach it without touching something unhelpful on the way. An operator is not an abstract symbol between two values; it occupies a place in the route. Planning therefore has two layers. First comes the quiet question of what arithmetic will reach the target. CALCULATE is not a keypad
CALCULATE starts with the target, not with a printed equation. Junior takes numbers and signs such as plus and minus, and the game applies the arithmetic as the player builds it. The official rules make a small but decisive restriction clear: the collection order is number, then symbol, then number. Two digits cannot simply be taken consecutively. That rule prevents the screen from becoming a loose pile of numerical pickups. It gives every choice grammar. A player cannot grab whatever is closest and call it an answer; they must make an expression that the game can read. 4 7
The previous result becomes the starting point for the next operation, so the player can approach the target by a succession of small transformations. This is why CALCULATE feels closer to mental navigation than to an ordinary worksheet. A player can look for a direct answer, or begin from a convenient digit and steer toward the answer through addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. A perfectly valid plan may be slow to collect. A faster-looking plan may leave Junior standing beside a digit that makes the next step awkward. Trivia If a division does not come out evenly, CALCULATE truncates the result. The official manual also says that when a result reaches five digits or more, only the lower four digits count. Those are not classroom-default rules that a player can safely assume; they are game rules, and knowing them changes the routes that are possible. The cartridge quietly teaches a useful lesson about systems: arithmetic inside a machine has stated boundaries. A clever sequence can be clever because it understands those boundaries, rather than because it resembles the sum a player expected to write on paper. 7 8
Reset is a real decision
The B button does more than erase an embarrassing typo. In CALCULATE it resets the answer a player has assembled, which makes a mistaken pickup visible as a change of plan rather than a silent correction. Nintendo's own tips warn that taking the wrong digit can force the player to alter the procedure they had first imagined. That is a sharp piece of design. The game lets a player recover, but recovery costs time and attention. The screen does not permit an incorrect move to vanish into the background; it asks whether the player will restart the chain or find a new route from the state they created. 6 7
This makes CALCULATE surprisingly expressive for such a compact setup. The intended calculation is not necessarily the best calculation after a mistake. A player who intended to add a certain value may have to subtract, multiply, or take a longer series of steps because the convenient sign has already been used. The game rewards foresight, but it also rewards the ability to revise without panic. In that sense the reset button is part of the puzzle's vocabulary. Trivia CALCULATE B preserves its initially given number even when the player resets. B otherwise follows the same basic process as A, but the original manual says it can begin with a number already supplied and can use negative target numbers, making it harder. That small exception gives reset a different meaning in the advanced game. The player can clear a bad working chain, but cannot erase the premise they were handed. It is a neat way to raise difficulty without replacing the entire ruleset: the same movement and symbols remain, while the starting arithmetic becomes less forgiving. 3 7 8
The other Junior is the problem
The two-player CALCULATE game is where its arithmetic becomes openly mischievous. Both Juniors share the same field of numbers and symbols. Winning is not just a matter of reaching an answer faster than another person; each player can take the piece the other player needs. Nintendo describes this bluntly in its tips: if an opponent appears to be heading for a 6, taking that 6 first can throw their calculation off. The rule turns observation into a mathematical skill. Seeing an opponent's route is not merely defensive information. It is an invitation to change it. 6 8
That shared-board design is clever because interference is never automatically useful. Stealing a digit only helps if the thief can also use it without derailing their own result. A player must calculate for two people at once: what number would help me, what number would help them, and which one can I reach before the board changes? This is not a race appended to a lesson. Trivia CALCULATE displays both the brown first-player Junior and the pink second-player Junior even when only one person is playing; the unused character simply does not move. In a competitive game, the first player to five wins takes the match. Those details give the screen a clear social identity. The inactive Junior is a reminder that the board was made to be shared, while the five-win finish keeps a successful expression from being merely a private achievement. Each completed target is a point in an argument, and the argument ends only when someone has collected five of them first. 4 7
EXERCISE makes the blank visible
+−×÷ EXERCISE changes the question without discarding Junior's movement. The player chooses addition, subtraction, multiplication or division practice, then sees an incomplete expression at the upper right of the screen. A white blank indicates the next position to fill. Junior moves to the chain beneath it, and moving up or down cycles the available digit before a sideways move confirms the choice. The action is calmer than CALCULATE, but it is still action with a purpose. The missing number is a place in an equation and a place on the screen at the same time. 5 7
This is a good design for practice because it separates the two things CALCULATE deliberately entangles. The arithmetic is fixed: there is a known expression to complete. The physical work remains: find the active blank, adjust the digit, and commit. That preserves the game's distinctive sense that an answer has to be reached, while giving a player a more legible way to focus on the procedure itself. The player is not asked to invent a chain from scattered pieces. They are asked to understand why a particular space in a particular equation needs one particular value. 2 5
Trivia One EXERCISE game contains ten questions. A flawless answer earns an egg mark beside the question, while an incorrect finished expression sends the player back to begin again from the wrong place. The original manual even provides a rescue: when the answer is impossible to find, pushing the indicator all the way to the top reveals the correct answer and advances to the next question. It is a generous failure state. The game does not leave the player trapped behind a fact they do not know; it exposes the answer, preserves the pace, and lets the next problem become another chance to understand it. 5 7 8

The four signs in the EXERCISE title are more than a promise of subject coverage. Addition and subtraction can make a player think in steps toward or away from a target; multiplication and division can make the same screen feel like a more abrupt change in scale. CALCULATE lets those operations share one route, whereas EXERCISE lets a player choose a family of problems before the ten-question session begins. The result is a cartridge that understands arithmetic as a set of different rhythms. A sign changes the value, certainly, but it also changes the kind of plan a player needs to hold in mind. 3 4 5
Trivia Nintendo's original instructions say CALCULATE uses the digits 1 through 9 together with +, −, × and ÷. The one-digit limitation is fundamental to its feel. The player is not composing long numbers as if entering them into a calculator; every new value is a single, visible pickup that must be joined to the running result by an operator. That constraint keeps the board readable and makes a simple digit valuable. A 3 is not a small piece of a larger number. Junior is important here not because this game is a disguised version of another Donkey Kong adventure, but because he gives the arithmetic a readable body. He climbs to a digit, jumps to an island, hangs beneath a blank, and celebrates a correct expression. Donkey Kong's role is equally focused: he shows the target number in CALCULATE. Their familiar shapes make the screen immediately legible, but the story is not the point. Trivia The original Famicom manual calls the two-player Juniors different colours and describes Donkey Kong as Junior's father presenting the problems. CALCULATE gives the player a target, a supply of digits and signs, a running result and, sometimes, another player trying to spoil the route. EXERCISE gives the player a blank, a sequence and a way to reveal a stuck answer before moving on. Both forms understand arithmetic as something active. The original Japanese Famicom game therefore has a very specific kind of tension. It is not the tension of a long campaign or a complicated competitive sport.
