Section 01

Family Computer: the living-room machine that learned new verbs

The Family Computer did not arrive with one idea of play tucked inside it. Nintendo’s 1983 machine was a home platform built to keep changing its accent every time a different cartridge clicked in. That sounds ordinary now. In the living room of the mid-eighties, it meant the same red-and-white box could turn the television from a ladder-and-barrel panic room into a scrolling obstacle course, a maze, or a place to get wonderfully lost. 1 3

Start with Donkey Kong. Its compact screen makes every object legible at a glance: a ladder is an invitation, a barrel is an argument, and a badly timed step is a small tragedy. Super Mario Bros. stretches that immediate clarity sideways. The pleasure is no longer only solving the screen in front of you; it is trusting that the next patch of ground may teach a fresh rhythm of running, jumping, braking, and recovering. The Famicom’s most lasting magic is not that it made games look alike. It gave designers a common, approachable language of buttons and pixels, then let them disagree brilliantly about what a player should do with it. 3 4

The machine also learned how to hold a longer thought. Nintendo’s 1986 Disk System expansion was presented as a way to play larger-scale works, and The Legend of Zelda makes that promise feel personal. A cave is not merely decoration; it can become a remembered question. Metroid pushes the feeling further: a sealed door or impossible ledge can turn an early room into a note addressed to the future player. In both games, coming back is not failure or filler. It is the moment when memory becomes an ability. 2 5 6

That is the funny contradiction at the heart of the Famicom. Its early classics are often easy to explain—run right, climb up, find the door—but they became durable by leaving room for the player to learn a private map of habits, shortcuts, and suspicions. The next Nintendo generation would make those worlds brighter and more theatrical. First, though, the Famicom taught the television to invite a family into a rule set and then quietly dare each person to master it differently. 4 5 6

Super Famicom: when the level became a stage

The Super Famicom did not make the old Nintendo instincts disappear. It gave them a bigger stage, better lighting, and enough sound to make an entrance feel like an event. The important change was not simply that sprites looked smoother. A jump could now be framed as a little performance; a route could have an atmosphere; a secret could feel like a wink from the world rather than a hidden accounting exercise. 1 7

Super Mario World, released alongside the Japanese Super Famicom, is the cleanest demonstration. Nintendo’s own history calls out the upgrade in graphics, sound, and presentation, but the game’s cleverest trick is structural. A course can be cleared in the obvious way, or it can cough up an alternate exit or a secret keyhole that redraws the world map. One successful run is therefore not always a conclusion. Sometimes it is a rumour about a better road. Add the cape, Yoshi, and all those tempting corners in the sky, and the familiar act of moving left to right starts to feel like touring a stage with trapdoors beneath the scenery. 7 8

F-ZERO makes a different use of spectacle. Nintendo describes four distinct machines, fifteen circuits across nine planetary cities, and track hazards that damage or unsettle a racer. The important sensation is not merely speed. It is the uneasy thrill of reading a bright future-city at speed: a guard beam is not background art when it can ruin a line, and a slick section is not decoration when it changes the next decision. The Super Famicom could make a course look extravagant while still asking the old, delicious question: did you notice the danger early enough? 9 10

Then there is Mario Paint, a lovely reminder that a larger stage did not have to be reserved for heroic adventure. It lets the console’s livelier audiovisual personality lean toward making, drawing, and fooling around. Put that beside Mario World’s secret routes or F-ZERO’s hard-edged speed, and the era feels less like a simple leap in horsepower than a leap in mood. The player is not only surviving a screen; they are being asked to explore a place, feel its rhythm, or leave a little mark on it. The Game Boy would answer that richness with a mischievous question of its own: what if the world could come along in a pocket? 11 8 10

Section 03

Game Boy: the game that waited in a pocket

The Game Boy changed the question from ‘What can a television show tonight?’ to ‘What can stay with you until the next spare minute?’ Nintendo’s hardware history gives the answer in unglamorous but revealing numbers: a small 160-by-144 display, four shades of grey, four AA batteries, and roughly fifteen hours of battery life. That is not the language of a showroom spectacle. It is the language of a companion—something willing to wait in a bag, survive a train ride, and ask for one more try while the rest of the day is happening. 12

Tetris is the perfect pocket-sized dare. Its falling pieces turn a few seconds of attention into an entire crisis: keep the well clean, save the long piece, regret everything. The monochrome screen does not make the decision smaller. It makes the decision legible. Super Mario Land takes the equally direct grammar of a side-scroller and folds it into a journey that can be picked up in short bursts. Neither game needs a grand ceremony to begin. A button press is enough to reopen the problem. 14 15

The Game Boy could be solitary without being lonely. Nintendo’s Link Cable documentation says compatible games could trade scores, trade Pokémon, or be played together, provided each player had the necessary equipment and software. That modest wire changes the emotional scale of a handheld. A pocket machine can hold a private score chase, then suddenly become a reason to lean across a table and compare, exchange, or compete. 13

Donkey Kong and Wario Land 3 show how the system also made room for longer affection. One turns familiar Mario-and-ape imagery into a broader puzzle journey; the other turns Wario’s indignities into routes through a world that keeps changing its mind. A small screen does not prevent a large memory. It asks the designer to make each room, enemy, chest, and return visit worth recognizing immediately. Portable play was no longer a reduced version of the main event. It had its own pace: private, repeatable, occasionally social, and always ready to be taken somewhere else. 16 17

Game Boy Advance: more colour, more fingers, more friends

The Game Boy Advance arrived with a very Nintendo answer to progress: make the pocket world more colourful and capable, but do not throw away its old memories. Nintendo’s Japanese hardware page advertised a wider 2.9-inch colour screen, 32,000 simultaneous colours, a move from the Game Boy’s 8-bit lineage to a 32-bit CPU, and compatibility with older Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. The result is not simply a handheld that looks busier. It is a handheld that can carry familiar habits forward while giving designers more room to choreograph them. 18 19

The controller quietly tells the same story. Nintendo highlighted the added L and R buttons as controls creators had wanted. In Mario Kart Advance, that extra vocabulary belongs naturally beside speed, position, and split-second course judgement; the portable race feels less like a compromised console outing than a game built around hands that have more to do. Made in Wario takes another route. Its rapid, colourful microgames turn audiovisual clarity into comedy: the player is not studying a dense manual, but reacting before the joke evaporates. 18 20 21

The real party trick is social. Nintendo distinguished ordinary multi-cartridge play from one-cartridge play: for compatible software, one Game Pak and a dedicated link cable could serve two to four players. That is a subtle but important change in invitation. The old question—‘did everyone bring a copy?’—could sometimes become ‘who wants in?’ The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past & Four Swords is an ideal doorway to that thought, joining a grand solo adventure to a game built around several players sharing the same unfolding problem. 18 22

Metroid Fusion provides the other half of the GBA personality: a tightly directed, colour-rich adventure that still belongs in the palm of a hand. The generation did not abandon the Game Boy’s talent for intimate play. It multiplied the ways a player could touch it—more visual contrast, more controls, old cartridges returning for another run, and local multiplayer that could start with fewer copies. The next step for Nintendo would be to divide the pocket screen in two. GBA had already made one screen feel surprisingly crowded with possibility. 23 18

Nintendo 64: learning to move through a world

Nintendo 64 made a simple promise that turned out to be enormous: the player would no longer merely cross a screen, but inhabit a space. The controller’s central stick was not just a new knob for walking faster or slower. It gave designers a way to make a tiny nudge, a committed run, a tight turn, and an anxious correction feel like different thoughts. That is why Super Mario 64 still feels so alert. Mario does not simply have more moves than his 2D ancestors; he has room to hesitate, curve around a ledge, build speed for a long jump, or make a ridiculous save after the camera has revealed that the floor is farther away than it looked. 24 28

The funny part is that 3D freedom immediately created a new companion nobody could ignore: the camera. A side-scroller could keep the player and the danger in one dependable frame. In a 3D castle, the view has opinions. It may show a tempting platform, hide the landing, swing around a wall, or suddenly make a familiar room feel strange. Nintendo’s developers later described the long effort to make cameras work for Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. That struggle is visible in the games, but it is also their charm. Ocarina turns attention into adventure: a distant doorway, a locked-on foe, or a suspicious object can become the next question simply because the player can circle it and look again. 25 28 29

Other N64 games made the same hardware feel like a different language. In Wave Race 64, the stick is less like a direction key than a handlebar: water pushes back, turns have weight, and a neat line through a buoy gate feels earned rather than selected from a menu. Star Fox 64 uses 3D space for theatrical flying. Team-mates chatter, routes branch, and a straightforward mission can become a rescue job or a detour. Mario Kart 64 reminds everyone that a living room can be its own kind of world. Four controller ports turn the sofa into a crowded cockpit, where somebody is always looking at the wrong quarter of the television just before a shell arrives. 30 27 31 32 24

The machine was powerful, but not limitless. Its developers still had to decide what to show, what to save for later, and how large a world could feel inside a fixed memory budget. That tension gave N64 games a particular confidence. They rarely try to show everything at once. Instead, they invite a player to turn the corner, test the jump, follow the sound, and discover that the space had one more trick waiting just outside the frame. 26

Nintendo GameCube: when more detail became something you could feel

GameCube arrived with a compact box, a carry handle that made it look almost toy-like, and a controller designed more by touch than symmetry. The large green A button sits where a thumb expects a main action to be; its smaller neighbours feel like supporting characters. The sticks, shoulder triggers, rumble, and C Stick make the controller less a flat panel of instructions than a small machine for giving a game texture. GameCube’s most memorable moments often come from that texture: a pull, a turn, a shudder, a held trigger, a movement that looks good because it feels good first. 34 35

Luigi’s Mansion is a perfect early example. The mansion is full of shadows, furniture, doors, and ghosts with theatrical personalities, yet the essential joke is wonderfully physical: Luigi points a light, startles a ghost, and then has to wrestle it into a vacuum cleaner. The player is not merely told that a ghost is resisting. The tug-of-war lives in the repeated stick movement and the nervous swing of the hose. A haunted house becomes a place where cartoon fear and household labour share the same control scheme. 37 34

The Wind Waker took the opposite route. Its ocean and islands were built with a bright, animated clarity. Its toon-rendered Link does not stand still like a figurine waiting for a command; he leans, reacts, glances, and springs into motion. Nintendo described the goal as making ordinary inputs feel as though the player had stepped into an animated film. That is a lovely way to understand GameCube at its best: power was not only for sharper surfaces, but for making a character’s response read quickly enough to become part of the pleasure of pressing a button. 36 38

There was muscle here too. F-ZERO GX makes speed feel almost impolite. Tracks arrive so quickly that a corner becomes a dare, and a machine that survives a race can feel like it has negotiated a private treaty with gravity. Super Mario Strikers puts the console’s four controller ports to gleeful use, turning football into a shouting match of tackles and sudden shots. GameCube moved Nintendo’s home games into a different disc-based production environment, yet its personality was never simply ‘more.’ It kept asking how detail could become readable, responsive, and social—something seen on screen, heard in the room, and felt in the hands. 33 39 40 35

Virtual Boy: depth is not the same thing as progress

Virtual Boy is the machine in this collection that makes any tidy story about progress wobble. It came from the same company, in the same broad era, as Nintendo 64, and both machines cared deeply about ‘3D.’ Yet they chased almost opposite dreams. N64 wanted players to steer through large, rendered spaces on a television. Virtual Boy put a red-and-black world inside a visor and asked a more peculiar question: what if the screen itself had layers that mattered? 41

That question could be thrillingly direct. Red Alarm lets its ship rotate and slide through a three-dimensional interior, turning distance from a visual effect into a survival skill. Vertical Force makes the idea even more literal by letting its craft switch between two lines of height. Depth becomes a lane, a dodge, and a tactical choice. Space Invaders Virtual Collection is especially revealing because it includes both a familiar flat mode and a Virtual Mode. Put them side by side and the experiment becomes visible: the old shooting game remains, but enemies approaching from the screen’s depth change the emotional shape of waiting, aiming, and panicking. 43 44 45

The cleverest Virtual Boy games understood that depth did not have to mean enormous worlds. Virtual Boy Wario Land uses layers like a magician uses trapdoors. Foreground and background become places for secrets, enemy surprises, and routes that only make sense once the eye begins separating the planes. Galactic Pinball turns the same idea into a table: the puck, targets, and distant machinery are easier to read as objects occupying a little theatre rather than stickers pasted onto glass. The system’s red-and-black palette can look severe in screenshots, but that severity is part of the lesson. With colour stripped back, position has to do more work. 46 47 42

There is an almost comic contrast here. Virtual Boy aimed for a new kind of 3D experience, yet many of its best ideas are modest: a ball coming toward the player, a platform behind another platform, a ship moving to a safer depth line. We do not need to read it as a straight prehistory of modern virtual reality. Among seven Nintendo machines, it is the useful interruption—the reminder that hardware history is full of side paths. Some become standards. Some become beloved oddities. Both can teach designers the same durable lesson: a new dimension matters only when a game gives the player a reason to care where they are inside it. 41 42
